God of War is currently one of the strongest brands in Sony’s portfolio . The series debuted in 2005 on the PlayStation 2 and since then, Kratos’ adventures have been released regularly on subsequent generations of the Japanese manufacturer’s consoles.

Currently, we have four main installments of the series and several spin-offs. In The Last God of War (from 2018), the creators abandoned Greek mythology in favor of the cooler climate of Scandinavian mythology.

The strength of the God of War brand is best demonstrated by the reaction of gamers during last year’s PlayStation 5 Game Show . Sony published a short teaser for the next part of the series, which only revealed the subtitle – Ragnarok and the approximate release date – 2021 , and it was enough for the new God of War to become the most anticipated title this year.

God of War: Ragnarok is coming?

Kratos and his son Atreus will star again in God of War: Ragnarok . As the title of the latest installment in the series indicates, this time father and son will have to face Ragnarok (the northern version of the end of the world). Both old and new competitors will stand in their way.

Game

Released in 2018, God of War was the largest, longest and most comprehensive installment in the series. The production was enriched with many elements from RPGs – collecting and upgrading equipment, developing the abilities of Kratos and Atreus, many side missions and activities, as well as very large maps that allowed a lot of freedom in the game. Also a big change was moving the camera closer to the action and slinging it over the main character’s shoulder (similar to Gears of War).

 

We can safely assume that the creators of the new God of War – Santa Monica Studio – will want to keep most of the solutions that came to the series in 2018 and develop accordingly. Will we finally get a God of War with a true open world? Unfortunately, in a somewhat unlikely way, Cory Barlog – lead director of God of War II and God of War (2018) revealed in an interview before the latter’s premiere that he and his team thought about introducing an open world to the series, but in the end it was no. Compatible with the God of War series. If the creators do not see anything wrong with this, we can again count on exceptionally large maps, but they are only an alternative to the open world.

Although Kratos, as we well know, is a demigod, he is vulnerable to the passage of time. Of course, the creators of the game in an ingenious way can extend the “life” of the hero indefinitely, but it is increasingly likely that someone will have to replace him. It’s hard to find a better candidate than Atreus, who will play a much bigger role in the next part of the series . Therefore, we can expect not only new skills and abilities for the young hero, but also other ways to interact with his father and opponents. God of War Ragnarok – Gameplay

Shortly after the first teaser was made, it was suggested that we’d see gameplay from God of War: Ragnarok in December 2020. As we know, that didn’t happen.

We had to wait for the first gameplay trailer with God of War: Ragnarok until September 2021, when Sony and Santa Monica gave us their first large-scale game.

God of War Ragnarok only for PS5, or maybe also for PS4?

Sony has sworn that it “believes in generations,” and all games developed by internal teams (after The Last of Us Part 2) will go exclusively to PS5. It wouldn’t be surprising if it weren’t for a completely new and unannounced project, and not the next part of the God of War series. According to the content of the announcement, a creative director is currently being sought to help implement the new game from its inception to its release.

What could this mean? It’s likely that the team responsible for God of War: Ragnarok has already completed major work on the title and is now focused on polishing it, removing bugs, and implementing fixes. It is also possible that some Sony Santa Monica employees have already been “switched” to a new project.

So when can we expect the new God of War to debut? For now, the most realistic release date seems to be fall/winter 2021. Sony has already planned big premieres for April and June of this year (the upcoming Returnal and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart). In the summer, the biggest producers hold back from releasing the biggest titles, but they make up for it in the fall. Then God of War: Ragnarok could appear for the first time. Although we wouldn’t be surprised if the Sony Santa Monica premiere takes place a little later, right before the 2021 holiday season.

We’re not the only ones looking forward to the debut of the new God of War . Hermann Holst – the head of PlayStation Studios, admitted in one of the recent interviews that he “fell in love” with the game God of War released in 2018 and can’t wait for the players’ reaction when they see what Sony Santa Monica studio has prepared this time.

Playing God of War in 2018 was an amazing experience for me. The series has always had great action and battles, but the emotional depth Santa Monica brought to Kratos’ story as a father was unforgettable – especially since my son was a little older than Atreus when I played it. It was a very interesting experience to watch players’ reaction to this little preview that we revealed at PlayStation Showcase last September. I can’t wait for people to see what Santa Monica is made of.

Update 01/03/2021 – A new God of War in 2021 is unlikely

Although the first (and so far only) teaser of the new installment in the God of War series mentions 2021, it seems unlikely that Kratos will return to us in the coming months. Sony was very active last week, revealing its PS VR 2 virtual reality glasses, State of Play games show, and revealing its March slate of games as part of its PS Plus subscription. However, not all news was good. The confirmed candidate for its 2021 debut so far – Gran Turismo 7 , will arrive much later than expected. Jim Ryan – CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment revealed that due to the difficult situation caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the game from Polyphony Digital will appear in 2022 at the earliest.

What does all this have to do with God of War Ragnarok? Contrary to appearances, there are many more. The postponement of the GT7 premiere or the lack of new information about Horizon Forbidden West suggests that, contrary to previous assertions, the Japanese manufacturer’s in-house teams have much bigger problems than expected. This year’s premiere of the new God of War seems to have moved away. Moreover, an imminent premiere in 2022 is probably not out of the question.

Update 03/19/2021 – God of War: Ragnarok will end the ‘Saga of the North’. Next stop – Egypt

The next installment in the God of War series will almost certainly take place once again in Norse mythology. However, it is possible that Kratos and his son Atreus’ stay in this universe was too short. Remember, “God of War” comes from Greek mythology, where he spent many years, and players can enjoy his adventures many times over. In canonical terms, God of War 3 delivers the final story for this period . Then, in God of War (2018), Kratos actually appears in lands from Norse beliefs. “Ragnarok”, the purported title of the next part of the series, foreshadows a massive confrontation between our hero and the “northern” gods. It is likely that after these ups and downs, Kratos and his son will go to Egypt.

Where did these assumptions come from? Well, the first part of the “ God of War: Fallen God ” comic book series came out recently, and it is the official and canonical tie-in between God of War 3 and God of War (2018). In the presented story, Kratos has just wandered through Egypt, where he meets three mysterious characters – an old man, a monkey, and a bird who speaks in a human voice. It is believed that these may actually be Egyptian deities: Hekah, Thoth, and Khonsu. While we don’t yet know how God of War: Fallen God’s story will end, it’s possible that Kratos will return to Egypt after Ragnarok.

Most importantly, the creators of the God of War series of games – Sony Santa Monica studio, thought about porting the game to Egypt a few years ago, but in the end, team leader Cory Barlog decided on Norse mythology. Interestingly, Barlog stated at the time:

Half of the team wanted one, and the other half wanted the other. The teams were very close. In the end, I just had to sign a document about which way we would go and why he might go the other way at another time.

The key here seems to be the phrase ” and why the other way could be taken at another time “, indicating that Egypt is still in the heads of the creators and it’s likely that this is where Kratos will end up. Let’s hope this happens on this generation of consoles.

 

Update May 27, 2021 – God of War: Ragnarok is one of Sony’s major productions

In recent weeks, Sony has been less active, but given the upcoming E3 2021 exhibition and competition activities, the Japanese manufacturer has decided to go on the offensive. Today we will see screenshots from the game Horizon Forbidden West. Moreover, Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End will come out on PC. However, this is not the end of the good news for PlayStation fans . During the meeting with investors, Sony representatives bragged about the excellent results achieved by the PS5 . It’s not just about selling the console, but also about the high-quality production of exclusively Japanese equipment. Sony boasted high ratings for Demon’s Solus Remake or Spider-Man Miles Morales .Incidentally, the official titles and logos for the upcoming production have been revealed.

Among them: Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart , Horizon Forbidden West , Gran Turismo 7 or God of War: Ragnarok . So far, we can speculate if Kratos’ latest adventure will actually be subtitled “Ragnarok,” and that has been confirmed by Sony themselves. Moreover, we can see what the production logo will look like.

So we can officially look forward to God of War: Ragnarok. Is there a chance to show production this year? This seems less likely. It should be noted that Sony has not yet made an official announcement regarding this matter. However, we can safely assume that with the premiere of Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart (June 11), Horizon Forbidden West will appear this year exclusively on PS5, which may appear at the end of the year. Raganrok may be one of the biggest premieres of 2022 . However, we will have to wait a little longer for more details.

Update 06/04/2021 – God of War Ragnarok with a new release date. The game is also coming to PS4!

The end of speculation and conjecture, Hermann Holst – President of PlayStation Studios, has revealed some interesting information about future PS5 exclusives in an entry on the Official PlayStation Blog. Unfortunately, our previous assumptions have been confirmed and God of War Ragnarok will not debut in 2021 . Sony’s leader stressed that although work on the new part of the adventures of Kratos and Atreus is progressing well, the creators of the game – Sony Santa Monica studio – need more time to improve their work .

In the case of God of War, that project started a little later. So we made the decision to push the game into next year to ensure Santa Monica Studio can deliver the amazing God of War we all want to play – Herman Hulst.

However, this is not the end of the news about the new GoW. Holst also revealed that, like Horizon Forbidden West , God of War Ragnarok will be coming to both the manufacturer’s new generation of consoles (PS5) and older ones – the PlayStation 4 . The decision to release the game for the eighth generation is certainly surprising. However, Hulst stresses that in the case of all new games, we’ll be able to count on next-gen experiences. Moreover, PS4 owners will be able to count not only on Horizon Forbidden West or God of War Ragnarok , but also on Gran Turismo 7. However, the head of PlayStation Studios emphasized that not every new title from in-house teams will be able to achieve this. Passed on to the older generation.

When exactly will the Japanese manufacturer’s next event happen? Unfortunately, we do not know, but we can safely assume that it will take place in July. The aforementioned gameplay of the new part of the adventures of Kratos will surely impress many fans of the series with the need to wait a long time for the premiere of the game. This game will take place in 2022 at the earliest on PS5 and PS4.

Update 07/16/2021 – God of War Ragnarok may not appear until 2023!

Recent statements by Sony chiefs indicated that the release of God of War Ragnarok was originally scheduled for 2021. However, wanting to give developers more time, the Japanese producer decided to push back the release date for a few months. However, it turns out that these “few months” can extend into dozens or more.

During one of the recent interviews, Jim Ryan – President of Sony Interactive Entertainment was asked by a journalist about God of War Ragnarok, specifically about the game’s release date. Sony’s leader answered very vaguely that even he could not fully predict when the game would be released. He only confirmed that ” next year or later ” games like Horizon Forbidden West and God of War Ragnarok will appear . The second part of Ryan’s statement is particularly disturbing. The word “later” could mean that Sony’s Santa Monica game will miss its 2022 release .

Moreover, the Sony representative added that only the best and most polished games matter to his company, which are worth waiting a little longer. Admittedly, this seems a bit like a dip in the event of delays related to the launch of Horizon Forbidden West and God of War Ragnarok.

Update 09.06.2021 – God of War Ragnarok will be seen soon

We’ve had to wait a long time for new news on God of War Ragnarok . But this time, it was very positive. It turns out that the God of War Ragnarok premiere could take place this week. Sony representatives have officially revealed that next Thursday (September 9) there will be another “PlayStation Showcase 2021”. It will be dedicated to the future PlayStation 5. Therefore, we can safely assume that we will receive new information about upcoming exclusive games for the new console of the Japanese manufacturer. It will start The next State of Play event is at 22:00 Polish time and will last about 40 minutes.However , Sony confirms that after the main broadcast, additional material from the games shown will also be available, including interviews with the creators.

We already know that Sony’s internal teams won’t be able to release long-awaited releases like Gran Turismo 7 , Horizon Forbidden West , or God of War Ragnarok this year . So the upcoming show is the best chance to “please” a little buyers of PlayStation 5 consoles, who were hoping for a better end to 2021 from Sony.

Update 08/09/2021 – God of War at PlayStation Showcase 2021 is more than certain

We can be almost sure that tomorrow evening we will see the first trailer (and maybe even gameplay) for God of War Ragnarok . Where do you get this confidence? Information about the upcoming Sony event was shared with us by David Jaffe – creator of the God of War series. Currently, a former developer, he runs his own YouTube channel, where he comments on the most important happenings in the industry. During one of the streams, he revealed that he had received information about the games that will be shown during PlayStation Showcase 2021 . Jaffe didn’t reveal any details, of course, but confirmed that we can count on showing ” great traditional first-party games from PlayStation .” Moreover, some of the presentations aim to ” go crazy with the impression.”We can safely assume that Kratos’ creator had a pitch for the latest God of War in mind .

Update 09/09/2021 – Will God of War Ragnarok be twice the size of its predecessor?

Even though there’s only a dozen or so hours left until the PlayStation Showcase , new information about God of War Ragnarok is regularly posted online. Again, the source for the game is David Jaffe – the creator of the Kratos series. The former developer revealed that he had received information that Sony Santa Monica studio is aiming for the main Ragnarok campaign to be around 40 hours long . It should be noted that the average playtime in God of War from 2018 is around 20 hours. Of course, this time can be extended by performing additional activities, but in this case we are only talking about the main story line.

There were already rumors that the new God of War could get a completely open world, after all, the last part of the series was distinguished by large maps and a lot of freedom in the game. Will Kratos and his players finally be able to explore the game world on their own terms? We might find out tonight.

Update 09/10/2021 – God of War Ragnarok on premiere and gameplay

We had to wait a long time to get our first God of War Ragnarok material . Fortunately, as we’d expect, Sony showed off extensive material from the latest edition of Kratos’ adventures during the PlayStation Showcase. We also learned that Ragnarok will be the final installment of the series set in Norse mythology. Where Kratos and Atreus will go next, we don’t know yet, but it will likely be Egypt.

Ragnarok isn’t going to revolutionize gameplay, so if you loved God of War from 2018, you’ll have a great time here, too. We can certainly count on a bigger, more vibrant world for that. Kratos and Atreus will be able to explore many areas, including large and vibrant cities. In any case, it is better to see it yourself.

Update 10.07.2021 – God of War Ragnarok will get a Polish dub. There is the first humor

God of War from 2018 boasted a full Polish localization. Kratos was then played by Artur Dziorman , while Atreus was voiced by Bernard Lewandowski. We can already confirm that the first of these actors will also be returning for their role in God of War Ragnarok. Update 10/21/2021 – God of War Ragnarok has new textures. The developers reveal more details about the game

Sony intends to take the God of War franchise in a big way next year. Yesterday we learned that the 2018 version of the game will be released in an enhanced version on PC. Today, in turn, we can admire new materials from God of War Ragnarok in high definition.

In addition, Sony revealed some new details about the story that we will get to know in GoW Ragnarok.

Kratos and Atreus journey deep into the nine worlds in search of answers as the forces of Asgard prepare for war. On their journey, they will travel through stunning landscapes known from the cards of legend, gain allies from different worlds and face terrifying enemies such as Norse gods and monsters. Atreus seeks knowledge to understand Loki’s prophecy and his role in Ragnarok. Kratos has an important decision to make. Will he let his fear of repeating past mistakes get the better of him, or will he break free from his past and become the father Atreus needs? The specter of Ragnarok forces Kratos and Atreus to decide what is more important to them: the safety of their families or the fate of all worlds…

Update 12/28/2021 – We’ve probably learned the God of War Ragnarok release date

We already know a lot about God of War Ragnarok. Both Sony and Santa Monica studio confirm that the work in the game is running smoothly. What allows us to assume that the game will be released in 2022 when exactly? Sony isn’t disclosing details at this time, but it’s possible the PS Store database did. According to the information posted there, God of War Ragnarok will be released on September 30, 2022 . Of course, it should be remembered that this may just be a temporary date created for the purpose of placing the game in the store’s database. On the other hand, it is very likely.

Sony already has a “large number of employees” in the first half of next year. Horizon Forbidden West will be released on February 18th, and Gran Turismo on March 4th. We’ve already assumed that in this case Japanese producer God of War Ragnarok will be leaving for the second half of the year – so September 30 seems very real.

Update 12/30/2021 – God of War Ragnarok release in 2022 almost certain

There are more and more indications that the God of War Ragnarok premiere will actually take place next year. The Sony Santa Monica production received the #1 rating from the organization that rates game content and assigns age groups. According to VGAR (the equivalent of PEGI in Arabia), God of War Ragnarok will be for people over 18 years of age . The presence of the game in VGAR means that its premiere is approaching. These types of organizations usually receive games that are almost ready for release. This means we’ll have to wait a few more months for Kratos and Atreus to return.

 

Update March 28, 2022 – Won’t God of War Ragnarok be released in 2022? Developers are responding to the rumors

Although we haven’t received much new information about the long-awaited God of War Ragnarok in recent months , as we well know, the gaming industry abhors a vacuum. It was decided to use this by several leakers, who in recent days have reported that Sony Santa Monica is having big problems producing the new installment of the God of War series and that the premiere in 2022 is seriously threatened . Losing such an important title could be a source of concern for Sony. After a few days of silence, the game’s creators decided to point out all the fuss.

Update 04/04/2022 – God of War Ragnarok with new combat mechanics that will delight players?

God of War from 2018 significantly rebuilt the gameplay model of the popular series with Kratos in the main role. Studio Sony Santa Monica not only focused on the classic third-person view (with the camera close to the action), but also reconfigured the combat system. One of the main changes was the introduction of a new main weapon – the ax and the entire combat system associated with it. In the upcoming God of War Ragnarok, we can again expect a pleasant surprise.

Sony Santa Monica ‘s Beau Anthony Jimenez decided to respond to a fan’s comments about the ax throwing ability in God of War. The developer stated that he can’t wait for players to see what his team has prepared for God of War Ragnarok.

I’m really excited for players to react similarly to what we have in store for God of War: Ragnarök. Suffice it to say, the work has been fantastic – Bo Anthony Jimenez.
