Steam Deck – what is it?

Steam Deck is a handheld game console developed by Valve . The device will allow you to play games from our Steam library on equipment that is very similar to the Nintendo Switch .

However, it is more comprehensive than that. One might be tempted to say that Steam Deck is really a laptop . We will be able to connect an external monitor, mouse and keyboard to it and even install Windows.

However, the Steam Deck’s primary operating system will be the new SteamOS based on Linux. Thanks to a tool called Proton, we can easily run games that were made for Windows on it.

The console will also allow you to install other clients and play games from other sources, such as the Epic Games Store or Xbox Game Pass . In short, on Steam Deck we will do practically everything we can do on a standard PC.

Steam Deck – Release Date

Starting with the Steam Deck, it debuted at the end of last year. In July 2021, the possibility of reserving new valve equipment was launched .

Unfortunately, due to problems related, among other things, with the availability of microchips, the shipment of the first batch of devices was delayed.

From Valve’s last announcement we can find out that starting from February 25, the company will start sending out emails to people who have placed an order/reservation .

Customers will have 72 hours to complete the purchase . If they fail to do so, the reservation will be forfeited and transferred to the next person on the waiting list.

Shipments containing devices to people who were able to place an order last year will go through around February 28th.

For customers who will now keep the equipment for themselves, the device will be delivered after the second quarter of 2022 at the earliest .

Steam Deck – How to order?

At this point, it should be noted that placing an order does not include making a vapor deck purchase . Currently, we can only reserve the device. As soon as it is available, we will receive a message about the possibility of purchase.

Reservation requires payment of 18 zlotys . The amount at a later date will be deducted from the Steam Deck price . If we decide not to purchase, we will be refunded .

 

In order to make a reservation you must log in to your Steam account , search the Steam deck , select the variant that interests us and make the payment . And wait for information about the possibility of making a purchase.

Steam Deck – Which games will work?

Running a Steam Deck We’ll run most of the titles currently in the platform’s Steam library . Unfortunately, not all of these will be productions — at least at first.

Valve has developed a special system for rating and indexing games in terms of Steam Deck compatibility . After entering Steam on a portable console, we will see the appropriate icon next to each title.

• Verified – Game works fine on Steam Deck
• To play – the user may need to change the game
• Unsupported – The game cannot be launched on the Steam Deck at this time
• Status unknown – Game compatibility has not been checked

 

Valve is also constantly working on the ability to check games for compatibility with the Steam Deck in the Steam app on PC .

Details and dates are not yet known, but it can be suspected that soon, before buying the console, we will be able to check what are the signs for individual production .

The game verification process is very smooth and we can already say that we will be launching on the Steam Deck productions like Portal 2 , Hades and Dishonored , Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice , Dark Souls 3 , Death Stranding , Ghostrunner , Dark Souls 2 , The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and Tomb Raider And Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order and many more.

The list is quite long and based on it, we can say that games, even the most demanding ones, will run without any problems on the Valve console.

Steam Deck – How does it work in games?

Now that we know what titles we can launch on the Steam Deck, it’s worth considering how they work. Valve’s primary goal is to bring game frame rates to 30fps. A user who gained access to the Steam Deck decided to share the results of his tests with the world. Compare, among others, Cyberpunk 2077 , Tomb Raider , Doom about DOTA 2. What are the test results?

• Shadow of the Tomb Raider – at highest settings 30fps, average 60fps adjusted
• Death – on medium settings 60fps, on modified 46fps
• Cyberpunk 2077 – at high settings up to 20-30fps
• Dota 2 – at high settings 47 fps, at low 80 fps

 

Steam Deck – Will I buy from the store?

No, at least for now. Currently the Steam Deck is only sold through the official Valve platform . Maybe one day it will go to retail, but at the moment it is not possible.

Steam Deck – Will there be a docking station like there is on Nintendo Switch?

The valve creates a Steam Deck docking station . Thanks to it, we will be able to connect the device to an external monitor, a wired network, and other devices more easily. Currently, the price and date when the equipment will be available are not yet known.
