DeepMind: AI writes code better than programmers

DeepMind AlphaCode ranks among the top 54% of the world’s top developers. But this is not a human being, but an artificial intelligence.

According to the documentation, AlphaCode is capable of writing computer programs “at a competitive level and ranks among the 54% of the best human programmers”. The performance of the AI model was evaluated against ten challenges hosted by Codeforces, a platform that attracts developers looking to test their skills and knowledge. Codeforces allows you to compete with others to solve specialized problems.

The challenges that Codeforces serves are not typical tasks programmers face on a daily basis at work. However, they still require creative problem-solving skills and are an excellent indication of how good a developer is.

AlphaCode is the first artificial intelligence system ever capable of competing with humans in this type of challenge.

DeepMind AlphaCode

DeepMind is a company that Google acquired in 2014. It has always been one of the leaders in the development of artificial intelligence.

It was specialists from DeepMind who created AlphaGo, or AI, which became the first computer program in history to defeat a human in the Chinese game of Go.

DeepMind’s research and development activities cover many areas in which AI can be implemented. Now, thanks to AlphaCode, the company appears to have found promising new opportunities.

AlphaCode has undergone a very comprehensive “training” on a large set of open source code from GitHub. Next, the AI was improved using data collected from various programming competitions – a step the authors described as “critical to achieving adequate performance”.

While many people still beat AlphaCode in testing, the ability of AI to create cutting-edge solutions and deal with complex problems is very high. It is easy to see that AI has a great deal of potential for development in the coming years. As DeepMind stresses that AI is still in an early stage of development, so its capabilities will increase significantly.
