The first SSDs to use PCIe 5.0 this year

Solid-state drives (SSDs) with PCIe 5.0 x4 interface for demanding users will be on the market in 2022.

PCIe 5.0 SSDs will be able to take advantage of some of the core features of the 12th generation Intel “Alder Lake” processors and the 7th generation AMD Ryzen “Raphael” processors. Silicon Motion, one of the main developers of SSD controllers, has announced that enthusiast models (and thus expensive models) will go on sale later this year. The cheaper versions sold by the OEMs will appear later — perhaps not until late 2023 or 2024.

Silicon Motion has announced that it and its partners will offer SSD disks using the SM2508 controller. It will be equipped with a PCIe 5.0 x4 interface and provide a bandwidth of about 13 GB/s. This will give enthusiasts extremely fast storage access for desktop computers.

Currently, Silicon Motion is working on an SM2507 controller with a PCIe 5.0 interface to create drives suitable for mid-range desktop and laptop computers.

Before we get to SSDs with PCIe 5.0 for laptops (let’s add that laptops today sell 7 to 1 better than desktops), the company plans to please enthusiasts first, as you can get the highest margins, and also offer the SM8366 enterprise-class platform SSDs, as well as with PCIe 5.0 interface.

It is worth noting that the first laptops with 12th generation Intel processors have already begun to hit the market. Right now, however, you can’t count on accessing PCIe 5.0 SSDs — but there’s DDR5 memory and Gig + Wi-Fi 6E support.
