Russian attacks on Ukraine are causing disruption to internet access across the country
Britain’s Ministry of Defense said it was “highly likely” that additional damage caused by Russian attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure disrupted internet access.
Over the past week, Internet failures have been reported in Mariupol, Sumy, Kiev and Kharkiv. All four Ukrainian cities are currently under siege and are facing heavy bombardment by Russian military fire that hit residential buildings. Civilians, including children, are dying.

Over the weekend, Ukraine’s main internet service provider, Ukrtelecom, reported that the Russian bombings had severely damaged its telecommunications network. Repair crews worked to restore internet services, but the company had to cut throughput.
On Sunday, the company wrote on Facebook: “We remind you that due to damage to the infrastructure during the fighting, subscribers from 12 regions suffer from reduced Internet access.”
The British Ministry of Defense accuses the Russian military of deliberately trying to cut off Ukraine’s access to the Internet. As we read in the press release: “Russia may be targeting Ukraine’s communications infrastructure to restrict Ukrainian citizens’ access to reliable news and information.” As evidence, Great Britain cited a Russian military attack on the TV tower in the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv.
Satellite Internet company Viasat said it was experiencing partial network failures for customers in Ukraine and across Europe. European investigators suspect that the cause of the incident is hacker attacks linked to the war in Ukraine, and they are doing this on behalf of Russia. Currently, the Viasat website describes this disorder as an “electronic event” only.
To maintain Internet access in the country, the Ukrainian government is working with another satellite Internet provider – Elon Musk’s Starlink. “Next week, we will get another batch of Starlink systems for devastated cities,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky wrote on Saturday.
Elon Musk also warned of the possibility of the Russian military attacking Starlink equipment in Ukraine. As a result, it urges users in the country to take precautions when setting up the company’s satellite Internet system.
