Apple will cut its commission rate to 27% for Dutch dating app developers after Dutch consumer regulators repeatedly criticized the company for not making enough changes to its app store rules to address the imbalance in competition.

The Bureau of Consumers and Markets first reported the issue to Apple in August of last year. Then he issued an order to update the App Store rules – so that dating app providers could use payment systems other than those offered by Apple. The company was not particularly interested in this information, so the office attacked Apple again, accusing it of not making enough changes. Then a fine of 5 million euros was imposed.

In response, Apple clarified in a blog that it will cut the commission rate for dating apps by 3% and will also allow dating app providers to choose between two options when it comes to third-party payment systems.

Dutch dating app providers will now be able to use a third-party payment system in the app or place an in-app link that directs the user to the developer’s website to complete the purchase. However, in order to use either option, developers still have to request permissions to do so. They also need to upload a separate binary app, exclusively on the Dutch app storefront, and report the overseas sale to Apple in order to activate the third-party payment system. In other words, the procedure – apparently intentional – is very complex.

It is not yet known if these changes will allay the bureau’s concerns.
