Elon Musk wants to implant brain chips in people starting next year

Elon Musk has announced that his company will implant microprocessors into the brain of first people next year. The solution is to get people to communicate with technical devices, giving them commands directly from the head. The billionaire said experiments on monkeys are currently underway. Those with severe spinal cord injuries will be the first to receive the chips.

The American billionaire does not only produce electric cars and space rockets brand Tesla under the brand SpaceX. He is also a co-founder of Neuralink, a neurotechnology company, which has been developing chips for several years to improve the functioning of the brain. The richest man in the world said that after experiments with pigs and monkeys, it was time for humans.

At Neuralink, we’re working on a solution that gets people to connect with tech devices, and gives them commands right from the head. On the other hand, using a computer, the human brain can be “reprogrammed” when damaged. This technology is intended for medical applications such as treating severe spinal cord injuries and neurological disorders.

“It is hoped that next year the chip will infect the first people with severe spinal cord injuries,” Musk told the Wall Street Journal earlier this week at a CEB summit.

The businessman cautiously stated that experiments on monkeys are currently underway. He announced it at the end of last year, introducing the effects of a neural chip to a pig. Musk then demonstrated that the implant communicates with brain cells through 1,024 thin electrodes. The signals are sent to the computer via bluetooth. He added that the company is still looking for a solution that can use a different technology to increase the amount of data transferred.

Has his company, Neuralink, overcome these limitations? This was not disclosed.
