As reported by Reuters, Facebook has recognized Reels as key to its priorities.

Meta (then Facebook) launched Reels on Instagram in 2020 and Facebook in 2021 in response to the rapidly growing popularity of the short video app TikTok (belonging to the Chinese tech giant ByteDance).

The company, which claims that videos now account for half the time users spend on Facebook, has announced new ways in which creators can make money using Reels.

Meta is expanding its shareholder rewards program to more countries (150 countries in total) and is testing overlay ads – banners and “stickers” for creators to increase ad revenue. Half screen ads between Reels will be shown soon.

Meta announced in its latest financial results that it has to contend with the issues of Apple’s operating system privacy changes that have made it difficult for brands to target and measure ads on Facebook and Instagram. The company also mentioned macroeconomic issues such as supply chain disruptions. It also acknowledged that it expects revenue growth to slow in the next quarter due to increased competition for user time and a shift in engagement toward features like Reels that generate less revenue.

In an announcement on Tuesday, Meta also announced that it will offer updates so users can create and view Facebook Reels in new places, such as the Stories feature, the Watch tab, and at the top of the News Feed. In some countries, users will also be able to see suggested videos in their feed.
