PS5 Slim – release date, price, and specs

PS5 Slim – when will it be released? What will it look like? We give you all the information and rumors about the console.

PS5 has been with us for almost four months now. The latest console is hitting the sales lists and is currently hard to come by. Players from all over the world cast themselves every time the device is turned over.

The PlayStation 5 has already shown us its potential, especially in productions such as: Demon’s Souls Remake , Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales or Assassin’s Creed Valhalla.

However, even this premium equipment has some drawbacks. Gamers often complain about the size of the console, which can make you dizzy.

The PS5 , when placed horizontally, is 390mm wide, 104mm high, and 260mm deep. The exact weight of the device is 4.5 kg. The dimensions of the PS5 Digital Edition are almost identical, with the digital console measuring just 12mm thick and weighing 3.9kg.

For comparison, the PS4 Pro measures (not small at all): 295mm wide, 55mm high and 327mm deep. This makes the PlayStation 5 the largest console in Sony’s history.

No wonder it has already been speculated that the Japanese manufacturer plans to release a new version of the console – PS5 Slim. These assumptions are unfounded, as history teaches us, the appearance of PlayStation 5 in Slim version seems certain. However, questions remain: How much will the PS5 Slim cost? What will the console look like? What will he give us?

PS5 Slim – Release Date

Sony has already accustomed us to the fact that a few years after the premiere of the consoles of each subsequent generation, it prepares a new “slim” model – Slim .

Such was the case with the PlayStation 3 , which debuted in Japan in 2006, and got the Slim version three years later. On top of that, the PS3 got another update in the form of the “Super Slim” model, which debuted in the fall of 2012.

Sony’s representative in the eighth generation of gaming consoles – PlayStation 4 , also received the “Slim” model.

As in the past, the “slimmed down” version debuted three years after the launch of the original PS4 – in 2016. In both cases, not only the dimensions or weight of the consoles were reduced, but also the power consumption and the size of the components.

If the Japanese manufacturer wants to maintain the tradition, we can expect the PS5 Slim to reach us in late 2023 or early 2024 .

However, it should be borne in mind that the COVID-19 pandemic and problems with the availability of components may cause Sony to decide to launch new equipment later this time.

PS5 Slim – Appearance

What will the new version of PlayStation 5 look like? Well, we can be sure that the dimensions of the console will decrease . However, let’s hope that this will not adversely affect the operation of the device itself.

It should be noted here that Sony representatives have repeatedly confirmed that such a large PS5 housing was chosen deliberately. It provides better air circulation, and therefore better device cooling and quieter operation.

The solution to this problem may be a new system that is smaller and more energy efficient and will no longer require such intense cooling.

What the PS5 Slim could look like is shown through renderings and video materials made by LetsGoDigital, in collaboration with Jermaine Smit (aka “Concept Creator”).

Updated 1/12/2021

Jermaine Smit (” Concept Creator”) and LetsGoDigital are back with even more awesome PlayStation 5 Slim concept art . This time, the creators are tempted by the more streamlined shapes of the PlayStation 5. By the way, we can also admire how the authors think the PS5 Pro will look.

PS5 Slim – specifications and capabilities

As for the specifications of the PS5 Slim itself, this shouldn’t differ greatly from what the PS5 offers us today. This means that it will look pretty much like this:

  • CPU: Octa-core, 3.5GHz (variable frequency), modified Zen 2 architecture
  • GPU: 10.28 TFLOPS, 36 CUs (variable frequency 2.23 GHz), RDNA 2 modulation
  • Operating memory: 16 GB GDDR6 / 256-bit
  • Memory bandwidth: 448 GB/s
  • Internal memory: 825 GB SSD
  • I/O (input/output) bandwidth: 5.5 GB/s (raw), 8-9 GB/s (compressed)
  • Expandable Memory: SSD (NVMe)
  • External Storage: Support for HDD via USB
  • Optical Disc: 4K UHD Blu-Ray

As you can imagine, the PS5 Slim will provide us with the same gaming experience as the original model .

It is unlikely that Sony would opt for Microsoft’s sales model, which already offers two significantly different variants of the ninth generation console – Xbox Series X and Series S.

PS5 Slim – Price

It’s time to answer the most important question – will the PS5 Slim be cheaper on release day than the Classic Edition? We can safely assume that!

PS5 Slim - Release date, price and specs [04/14/2022]

Sony has already accustomed us to the fact that “thin” versions are always cheaper. Remember that on the day of the premiere, the PS4 was priced at $399. The PS4 Slim console was released three years later, and cost “only” $299 on the day it debuted.

After this progression, we can assume that the price of the PS5 Slim should be around $400 (which is what you currently have to pay for a PS5 Digital Edition) or less.

PS5 Slim or maybe Pro?

A few months ago, the Taiwanese supplier of PlayStation 5 components revealed in an interview with DigiTimes journalists that Sony intends to sell at least 120 million copies of the new console within five years, after which it will launch its successor .

This means that the Japanese manufacturer wants to launch the PlayStation 6 around 2025 . This goal seems completely out of Sony’s reach. Although the PS5 is selling excellently, issues with equipment availability meant that the company’s owners had to lower their sales forecasts several times over.

Until now, each subsequent PlayStation console has been on the market for 6 or 7 years. There are more and more indications that a similar fate awaits the PS5.

Thus, we can be almost certain that the Japanese manufacturer will want to “spur” interest in its equipment at some point. PlayStation 4 received not only the “Slim” model, but also the more efficient “Pro”.

An improved variant of the console could easily extend the duration of the ninth generation and increase the profits of the Japanese manufacturer. In the case of the PS5 Slim, we can mainly count on changes in design and possibly more energy efficient solutions. However, the PS5 Pro is a completely different story.

It is expected that the owners of the company necessarily want to have the most powerful console on the market in their portfolio , ”and until now this title is most often held by the Xbox Series X.

What can PS5 Pro give us? How much will the new console cost? When can it hit the market? We attempt to answer these and many other questions in our comprehensive and frequently updated article on the console, which we highly encourage you to read.

Sony’s offensive continues – first the PSVR 2, then the PS5 Slim and finally the PS5 Pro

There are more and more indications that Sony will want to take care of as many devices as possible during its ninth generation of consoles. We already have PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Digital on the market.

PlayStation VR2 has already been officially presented, that is, next-generation virtual reality glasses, which we are likely to discover its full potential at the end of 2022 or at the beginning of 2023. What’s next?

There is no denying that although Sony is pleased with the sales of the PS5, the Japanese manufacturer understands that the greatest interest in the new console is already over.

Moreover, constant problems with the availability of equipment make players choose competing hardware. Sony needs to premiere high-profile titles (like God of War: Ragnarok) or a new hardware.

More and more indicates that Sony already has a very specific plan for the coming years .

In the second half of 2022, God of War: Ragnarok will hit the market. One of the most anticipated titles in recent years. A few months after the game’s release, Sony fans will be able to purchase PlayStation VR2 .

Surely, the Japanese manufacturer will massively promote its new virtual reality glasses, but at the end of 2023 the market will belong to the PS5 Slim.

Contrary to appearances, going into the PS5 Slim sale doesn’t necessarily mean a huge delay to the PS5 Pro premiere. It should be noted that during the eighth generation of consoles, the PS4 Slim and PS4 Pro appeared with an interval of only two months. So, what, in a nutshell, could Sony’s schedule above look like?

  • God of War: Ragnarok Debut – Second Half of 2022
  • PlayStation VR2 Premiere – End of 2022 or Beginning of 2023
  • Premiere of PlayStation 5 Slim – end of 2023
  • PS5 Pro Premiere – Q1 2024

Of course, you still need to remember that this is only a hypothetical (albeit increasingly likely) launch schedule from Sony.

summary

Although the appearance of the PS5 Slim seems inevitable, we still don’t know much about the device.

It will definitely be smaller and cheaper. However, will he offer something else, or maybe the PS5 Slim will appear, like the base variant, in two versions?

Update 05/17/2021 – A new version of the console is already in production

Although the PlayStation 5 has been on the market for just over half a year, according to the latest information, Sony is already working on a new version of the console ! This news was provided to us by DigiTimes journalists.

They have reached out to sources close to the manufacturer, which show that the Japanese are working on a new version of the PS5 console. Moreover, its production will begin between the second and third quarters of 2022. Therefore, we can expect the new PS5 to appear in stores at the end of 2022 at the earliest.

What can we expect from the new model? Unfortunately, it will not be the long-awaited “Slim”, but only the redesigned PlayStation 5.

Sony wants to use AMD’s new 6nm lithographic processors instead of the 5nm currently used to reduce production costs.

At the same time, the Japanese manufacturer hopes that easier access to new components from AMD will finally be able to bring the right number of consoles to the market.

What does this mean for fans of Sony consoles who have been waiting for a slim, “downsized” model? Well, most likely we will have to wait a little longer than usual for the new version of the console.

Thus, the PS5 Lite could reach us around 2023.

Update 08/18/2021 – Forget the PS5 Slim! Sony has plans for PS5 Pro!

We have been waiting for new information about the improved PlayStation 5 model for a long time.

However, it turns out that Sony may abandon plans to make the PS5 Slim and decide to release the PS5 Pro sooner than we think. Journalists from Moore’s Law is Dead channel, who are famous for uncovering key information from the tech industry early on, shared some interesting information with us.

Journalists revealed that they had reached sources stating that Sony plans to launch the PS5 Pro in 2023 ! Moreover, the new console guarantees a much greater technological leap than was the case with PS4 and PS4 Pro .

Unfortunately, there is also less optimistic news.

We’ll have to pay a lot for the new console.

It is suggested that the Japanese manufacturer should price its equipment at a level of at least $600/€ . This means that in Poland we will have to pay no less than PLN 2740 for a new console.

How likely is the information above? We dare say a lot.

It should be noted that the launch of the PS4 Pro and PS4 were three years apart, which is the same time that the information about the PS5 and PS5 Pro indicates .

Moreover, according to many experts (and Sony itself), the technological crisis related to the shortage of semiconductors will end in the second half of 2022 at the earliest.

So Sony will have plenty of time to prepare the correct number of copies of the new console. It should be noted that the PS5 Pro will most likely hit the market in November/December 2023.

It’s also increasingly likely that Sony won’t release a Slim model , why? First of all, the standard PS5 is still selling great (10 million consoles have already been delivered to gamers).

Moreover, due to component availability issues, the correct number of devices still does not reach the market.

The price of the device will also be an issue for the manufacturer. The PS5 Slim couldn’t be more expensive than the standard variant. Slim models usually feature minor technical corrections and design changes, i.e. nothing that justifies a price increase.

It should be noted that the Japanese manufacturer already has a cheaper model of its latest console in the form of the PS5 Digital. From Sony’s latest financial report, we learned that for the first time since the launch of the PS5, the company has started making money selling consoles alone. However, this applies only to the model with a Blu-ray drive, and in the case of a cheaper (digital) alternative, the manufacturer still counts the losses.

So from a financial point of view, launching Slim models seems pointless. What is different PS5 Pro can satisfy the most demanding users.

Update 09/24/2021 – Is Sony really working on a PS6? What about the PS5 Pro and Slim?

This is a surprise to you, as there are more and more indications that Sony has started working on the PlayStation 6 .

Where did these assumptions come from? Well, the Japanese manufacturer is currently officially looking for an employee in the R&D (Research and Development) department. As we can read in the job offer, his main task will be to design and develop the ” next PlayStation gaming platforms “.

Of course, it could also concern the PlayStation 5 Pro and Slim. However, since these devices could hit the market in the next 12 to 24 months, it is unlikely that a new employee will play a significant role in their design.

So it’s likely that Sony is already expanding its team to properly prepare for the premiere, Jubilee – Generation X.

It should also be noted that such activities are not new, conceptual work on the next generation of consoles usually begins shortly after the release of the latest model. For example, work on the PS4 officially started in 2008, just two years after the PS3 debuted.

Does a possible early start to work on the PS6 mean the end of dreams about the PS5 Slim and Pro? Not necessarily, the example of PS3 and PS4 shows us that a large manufacturer like Sony can easily work on many console models.

Moreover, the PS5 has been with us for less than a year and has already broken many records. Surely, the owners of the Japanese company will not consciously give up the profits that the latest version of PlayStation guarantees them.

It should also be remembered that it is much cheaper for the manufacturer to prepare an updated version of the console – Pro or Slim than to design a completely new device from scratch.

One thing we can be sure of is the PlayStation 6 , but we’ll have to wait a few more years for it to debut. At this time, we are likely to learn about the PlayStation 5 Slim and PS5 Pro models.

Update 10/26/2021 – Issues with semiconductor availability may affect launch of PS5 Slim

We already know that Sony is working on a new version of the PlayStation 5 console, which will allow the manufacturer to save some money.

However, in terms of power and design, it will be the same equipment that has been on the market for almost a year. So what about the slim version? It turns out that we can wait much longer than expected.

Semiconductors, which are still missing in the market, are all to blame. According to Phil Spencer – CEO of the Xbox brand, issues with the availability of next-generation consoles will also continue in 2022 .

Moreover, the owners of Intel recently stated that, in their opinion, only in 2023 will we be able to count on the greater availability of components, such as processors or graphics cards.

Sony leaders assure that they are doing their best to meet the demand for the PlayStation 5. Interest in the console is said to be so great that even without the issues with semiconductors, the Japanese manufacturer would have trouble producing the right number of devices.

All of this adds up to a not-so-optimistic set-up for those awaiting the PS5 Slim’s debut.

Perhaps we will have to wait for the new version of the console until the second half of 2023. The chances that the console will debut in 2022 have dropped to practically zero.

Update 11/25/2021 – Is the PS5 Slim any less likely? Sony will only bet on the professional variant?

We don’t have the best news for people who are still chasing their PlayStation 5 dreams or anticipating the imminent debut of an enhanced version of the console.

Jensen Huang, CEO of Nvidia, told Yahoo! Funding The ongoing global chip shortage is likely to continue throughout 2022, affecting the supply line for the PS5 and Xbox Series X/ S . What does this mean for the PS5 Slim ? As it turned out – nothing good. Sony has already accustomed us to the fact that “Slim” versions appeared on the market three years after the appearance of the basic version of the console.

This means that the “slim” PlayStation 5 should reach us in 2023 at the latest.

However, this date seems less and less realistic. Why? The answer is simple – Sony hasn’t sold enough 9th generation consoles yet.

Although the PS5 is breaking new records, the Japanese manufacturer’s management admitted that it had to lower its sales forecast for 2021 due to the pandemic and semiconductor availability issues.

Moreover, Sony has not yet managed to hit the sales ceiling to make money on the PS5 Digital Edition – this release is still a loss.

All of this means that Sony may eventually abandon the release of the Slim version . A slightly slimmer and (which is not confirmed) version of the PS5 in 2024 will not be an attractive “bite” for potential buyers.

Therefore, it seems more and more that the Japanese manufacturer will slightly change its schedule and in the middle of the current generation will want to update its range of devices, but thanks to more powerful equipment – PlayStation 5 Pro .

Will our expectations be met? We probably won’t know the answer to this question soon.

Update 09.12.2021 – There is hope for improvement in the console market. Sony has plans to build its own semiconductor plant

The worsening crisis related to the shortage of integrated circuits means that many manufacturers (not just controllers) have to limit the production of their products.

The future of the PlayStation 5 Slim also depends largely on the availability of semiconductors . Until now, we could only hear complaints and voices that didn’t fill us with optimism.

Owners of AMD , Nvidia or Intel scare us with more problems with the availability of semiconductors, which will stretch throughout 2022, and maybe even 2023. Cristiano Amon , CEO of Qualcomm , one of the largest component manufacturers in the world, has a different opinion.

He believes that already in the coming months the situation in the global market will begin to return to normal . So 2022 should bring a huge improvement to the gaming hardware market.

This means not only greater availability of next-generation consoles and their price normalization , but also a greater opportunity for their successors to debut. This is not the end of the good news, Sony is said to have established close cooperation with TSMC – a Taiwanese company specializing in the production of integrated circuits.

TSMC plans to launch its first iOS factory in Japan . Sony helped achieve this goal, not only investing US$7 billion in investment support, but also providing the Taiwanese manufacturer with land to build the plant.

In return, Sony will have priority in acquiring semiconductors produced there, as well as a small stake in the company that operates the plant in Japan.

Unfortunately, the first integrated circuits will not leave the new facility until 2023 or 2024.

Update 12/27/2021 – Another semiconductor manufacturer is ‘shielding’, but still not enough to meet market demands

In recent weeks, we have received a lot of information about the near future in the technology markets.

The fact is that the world is still deficient in semiconductors. It is worth emphasizing here that not only console manufacturers are in dire need of it.

Currently, they are used in almost every field – from entertainment, through cars and smartphones, to spaceflight. It was also shown that their absence can negatively affect the development of many areas.

An example of this is the console market. Given Sony’s trends so far, we can expect the PS5 Slim to debut around 2023 .

Unfortunately, recent projections and predictions indicate that next-generation consoles will be in short supply for a long time, which will also affect the release dates of the devices that follow.

Pat Gelsinger – CEO of Intel Corporation , revealed in one of his recent speeches that the semiconductor shortage may continue for many years .

This trend will not be stopped even by the increased efforts of many producers to increase production.

The current semiconductor shortage is so great that global markets will still feel it in 2023.

The overall semiconductor shortage is very large, and before COVID, the semiconductor industry was growing at about 5% annually. Covid has disrupted supply chains, making them passive… Demand has gone up 20% annually and disrupted supply chains have created a very large gap… And that growing demand continues – Pat Gelsinger, Intel.

What does this mean for the future of the PS5 Slim? If Sony decides to release the console, unfortunately, it seems unlikely that it will hit the market in 2023.

The Japanese manufacturer will first want to supply itself with the right amount of components to properly prepare for the launch of the new device.

Update 01/06/2022 – The PS5 Slim may appear sooner than we thought

Until recently, it looked like component issues would cripple the sale of next-gen consoles in both 2022 and 2023.

However, Ms. Lisa Su – CEO of AMD, has a different opinion. In one of her recent interviews, she stated that in the coming months, the situation in the console market will improve significantly and more devices will appear on store shelves.

Moreover, Lisa Su believes that as early as 2023, the new generation will record a growth peak. Thus, this would be the perfect time to introduce new or updated PlayStation 5 models.

We are still increasing production. We expect 2022 to be another year of strong growth for consoles. If you look at a typical cycle, the peak period is actually in the fourth year. And so you can expect 2023 to be the year of the biggest growth – Lisa Su, CEO, AMD

What does this mean for the PS5 Slim? Taking into account the predictions of the head of AMD, we can confidently assume that at the end of 2023 the market will be partially saturated with ninth generation consoles.

What’s more, Sony, wanting to maintain the peak of interest in its devices, will have to present an updated model of the PS5 console . It would be too early for a full successor, and the same is true for the PS5 Pro.

PS5 Slim is a different matter – often creating and releasing a “lightened” console model is the simplest and most economical solution for manufacturers to increase sales of devices of a particular generation.

You can be sure that as soon as we have more information about the PS5 Slim, we will let you know right away.
