In its quarterly Cyber Signals report on cybersecurity, the company used data from Microsoft Defender Antivirus and Azure Active Directory to understand today’s threat landscape and where brute force, phishing, and other malicious emails are exploited such as malware distribution.

Aside from these two sources, Microsoft also said it took data from the 24 trillion daily security signals it receives via the cloud or endpoints. As it turns out, in 2021, Microsoft Defender for Office 365 blocked more than 35.7 billion phishing and other malicious emails targeting businesses and consumers.

Furthermore, Defender for Endpoint has blocked more than 9.6 billion malware attacks on enterprise and consumer endpoints, while Azure Active Directory has detected and blocked more than 25.6 billion brute force attempts to hijack corporate customer accounts.

As long as businesses and consumers also continue to poorly manage their credentials and still leave their digital identities without key security features like multi-factor authentication (MFA), many hackers won’t have to change their tactics. The report states that we need more MFA guarantees, and this cannot be overstated.

The simplicity of identity-focused attacks and low cost makes them convenient and effective for cybercriminals. Microsoft believes that MFA is a “strong deterrent against attacks.”

At the same time, MFA is not the only identity and access management tool that organizations should use. Microsoft also mentions antivirus solutions, trustless network access, and firewalls.
